Evelyn Mitsos

August 19, 1930 ~ February 28, 2021 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Tribute

Evelyn Mitsos was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on August 19, 1930, as Evelyn Liarakos, the daughter of Louis L. Liarakos and Georgia Drivas Liarakos.  Evelyn attended elementary school, junior high school and high school in Wilmington, graduating from P.S. Dupont High School.  Upon graduation, she entered the University of Delaware, graduating in June 1952 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and French Literature with honors.

On September 7, 1952, she married Constantine N. Mitsos in the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Wilmington.  Three months later Constantine was ordained a Greek Orthodox priest in Santa Barbara, California, and served there as a priest with Evelyn as his presbytera.  Their son Nicholas was born in Santa Barbara.  After serving the church in Santa Barbara, Rev. Constantine was assigned to the parish of St. George in Huntington, West Virginia, where their daughter Georgia was born.  In September 1959, Rev. Constantine was assigned to the parish of Holy Trinity-St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Cincinnati, Ohio where he and Evelyn remained until his retirement in October 1990.

For her first three years in Cincinnati, Evelyn raised her young children at home.  In Fall 1962, Evelyn started her first teaching assignment at Western Hills High School as a teacher of French and English.  In 1968 she took a leave of absence to attend the University of Cincinnati, from where she received an M.A. in French Literature.  She then returned to full-time teaching at Dater Junior High School until her retirement in 1990. Evelyn and Rev. Constantine then moved to Boca Raton, Florida, to be near their daughter and grandchildren.  Rev. Constantine died on July 4, 2012.  Their daughter Georgia Mitsos Metropulos died on May 7, 2019.

Evelyn is survived by her son Nicholas and wife Dorothy and by her one sister, Sophia Liarakos Tarabicos.  Evelyn is also survived by her son-in-law Reverend Christopher Metropulos, seven grandchildren: Eleni (Anthony) Alexiou; Constance (Chris) Palesty; Constantine (Megan) Metropulos; Lucas (Ashley) Metropulos; Evalana Metropulos; Nicholas Metropulos; and Constantine Mitsopoulos.  She is also survived by three great-grandchildren: Nicola and Christina (Alexiou); and Thomas Metropulos. Evelyn is also survived by numerous relatives in the United States and Greece.  

Due to Covid restrictions, the funeral will be PRIVATE for Family Only.  It will be chanted on Friday, March 5, 2021, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 815 NE 15th Avenue, Ft.
