Harry Patrick Durkin, (91), of Fort Lauderdale, FL passed away peacefully on January 20, 2024.
 
Harry was born to Thomas and Mary Durkin on April 20, 1932, in Newark, New Jersey. He was a proud graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and St. Benedict’s Prep.  He was a talented baseball player who received a full scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. After graduating, Harry began a professional baseball career in the Detroit Tigers organization. In the off-season, he attended law school at Seton Hall University where he received his J.D.  Harry practiced law in New Jersey for nearly 30 years. He was also a successful businessman owning several in the West Orange area including a restaurant, liquor store, and arcade. 
 
Harry is survived by his loving wife Marlene (and her six children) and his four children from his first marriage of nearly 50 years to Alice Jane Mahoney (who preceded him in death);  Dan, Marty (Cathi), Mary Ann (Ed) and Hap, as well as his seven grandchildren; Connor (28), Colin (26), Jack (24), Houston (19), Mackenzie (19), Luke (12) and Logan (10). He is also survived by his brother Bobby. Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mary, his brothers Tom (Mickey), Richard and his sisters Mary and Veronica.
 
Harry’s loves were his Catholic faith, his family, Notre Dame, and serving others. He cherished his faith and led his entire life guided by it. He was a devout family man who loved his family deeply.  He was also a good friend to so many and went above and beyond to help whenever possible. Harry was affectionately known as a “Domer” who was extremely passionate about anything related to his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Between his faith, his upbringing and his shaping at Notre Dame, Harry was built to serve others. He gave of himself tirelessly in many ways from fundraising to clubs and boards which all benefited those who needed help the most. 
 
A Celebration of Life Mass is scheduled for March 2nd at 12:00pm at Assumption Catholic Church in Pompano Beach, FL.

In Lieu of Flowers, donations can be made to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Harry’s honor.
