Tribute

Judge John Allen Miller

April 9, 1937 – August 16, 2019

The Honorable Judge John Allen Miller, 82, of Ft Lauderdale passed away August 16, 2019. Survived by sons Malcolm and Max Miller, Daughter in Law and Malcolm’s wife, Jennifer Miller, 3 grandchildren Hanna, Avery and Palmer Miller.

By way of background, Judge Miller was born and raised in rural Indiana along with his twin brother, Edward, and sister Dr. Kay Buchanan. When his father, a country doctor, entered into service with the US Navy during World War II, the family moved to Brooklyn, New York. After the war, Judge Miller returned to Indiana where his fascination with machinery and farm equipment led to his becoming proficient in repairing almost anything mechanical, a trait that continued throughout his life.

Judge Miller’s primary education began in New York public schools and finished in a four room schoolhouse in rural Indiana. For high school, he rotated between Goshen in Indiana and South Broward in Hollywood Florida. A severe illness cut high school short, but he managed a convoluted undergraduate endeavor through Ball State Teachers College, The University of Miami, and eventually entering and graduating from Stetson Law School here in Florida. He liked to say that following eighth grade graduation, his only diploma was his LLB. He began his law practice in Fort Lauderdale in 1964.

Appointed in 1966, Judge Miller was named to fill a newly created judgeship in the Juvenile Justice system, Judge Miller went on to positions in the seventeenth district, culminating in thirty-six years of service to Broward County the longest sitting judge within the state of Florida. He was a gifted public speaker and often called upon to address judicial and law enforcement agencies. Judge Miller was active in civic affairs and past President of the Fort Lauderdale Beach Rotary Club.

A favorite caption posted on the wall behind his bench was from the Florida Supreme Court’s finding on a contested case where a judge fell asleep during trial was that “the judge doesn’t have to be right, he only has to rule.”
