Keith Rufus Carter

April 9, 1936 ~ May 25, 2022 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Tribute

Keith Rufus Carter, age 86, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, passed away on May 25, 2022, at Orchid Cove at Stuart nursing home in Stuart, Florida.

Keith was born on April 9, 1936, to the late George and Adelaide Carter in the Parish of St. John, Barbados. He was educated in Barbados. He was around 22 years of age when he went to West Palm Beach, Florida as a migrant worker for the Florida Sugar Producers Association. He later migrated to New York and acquired several jobs, including working as a construction worker and for the U.S. Postal Service. He retired from the New York City Transit (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) in 1995. He held several positions at New York City Transit, including Yardmaster and Tower Supervisor. His colleagues respected him immensely. Keith became a mason member of Mystic Star Lodge No. 62 in Queens, New York, in 1992.

Keith was predeceased by his wife, Jeannette Williams-Carter, his son, Michael Anthony Carter, and siblings, Michelle Carter-Sinclair, York Carter, Elma Carter, and Cathbert Carter. He leaves behind two siblings (Alister Carter & Myrtle Carter), his children and stepchildren, Cedric Carter (Jennifer), Derrick Carter, Kimberly Schaffer (Dwight), Sandra Roberts (Roger), Dennis Blue, former wife Maudry Carter, and several grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

To his family, Keith was one of the most determined individuals they have ever known. He believed anything was possible if you worked hard, possessed grit, and had an unwavering commitment to excellence. A Bajan who loved his home country of Barbados, he also loved the opportunities America provided him. He had an unquenchable thirst for learning new things, especially if it involved investments. He dabbled in several ventures, including becoming an advisor for Primerica Financial Services. We loved it when he said, "it served the purpose," whenever he thought a meal was mediocre. He loved life, his family, and God. He fought until his last breath. He was a fighter, and we will dearly miss him.
