Margaret B. “Peggy” Cooney, 95, died peacefully at her home on August 8, 2019 after a four -year fight to recover from effects of strokes suffered in 2015 and again this month. Peggy was a devoted and loving wife of 61 years to John T. “Jack” Cooney, (1921-2009) and an adoring mother to son John who predeceased her in 2017. She is survived by the other 6 of her 7 children - Mary, Patty (Ken) Bell, Dave (Rene), Steve, Mike (Kathy), Tom (Nancy), daughter-in-law Cathy and her 16 precious grandchildren Andy, Tim (Emily), Chris (Megan) and Phil (Tia) Bell, Liza, Mia, Lauren, Cailin, David, JP, Mallory, Kevin, Ryan, Daniel, Alex and Brooke Cooney, 6 great grandchildren, one sister Marianne (Roger) Foussard of Phoenix AZ and many nieces and nephews.

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, to John P. and Marie K. Bonner, Peggy was the oldest of three daughters, graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy, attended St. Catherine’s College and worked for the St. Paul Companies. She married Jack in 1948 and started a family before Jack’s employer relocated them first to Park Ridge, IL, then Dayton, OH and finally Fort Lauderdale in1960. The family also lived briefly in Weston MA before returning to FL in 1975. In the 80s Boynton Beach was also a golf dream residence before returning to Broward in 1994.

Peggy combined her busy life as wife and mother with a lifelong membership in the Junior League, served as a longtime volunteer with the Holy Cross Hospital Auxiliary and was active in the Boys and Girls Club Women’s Auxiliary. When she wasn’t supporting her family’s school, athletic or social activities and entertaining Jack’s clients, cruising became Peggy’s favorite form of vacation with over 20 trips worth of memories to enjoy. She also traveled regularly to join out of town/state special events for her extended and growing family. Peggy will be remembered for her consistent kindness, willingness to share a kind word, gentle disposition, devotion to her religion and especially her amazing quick wit.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Lauderdale, 4595 Bayview Drive, Fort Lauderdale, FL., In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Jack & Jill Children’s Center.
