Marjorie Sleem

February 27, 1931 ~ April 10, 2021 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Tribute

Marjorie Sleem (nee Doyle) left this realm on April 10, 2021. She was 90 years old, and for most of those years, experienced all the good things that life has to offer, while sharing her fun-loving spirit with everyone with whom she came into contact. Marjorie was born in London in 1931 and survived the London Blitz of World War 2 before heading to Jamaica on a banana boat to marry her husband, Dr. Kaleel Sleem. She is survived by her son, Dimitri, and her daughter, Denise, and by 5 grandchildren (Patrick, Kevin, Katie, Kyle, and Kaely) and 5 great-grandchildren.

Upon her husband’s death in 1981, Marjorie packed up and moved to Boston to live near her daughter. She was hired after her very first job interview and worked as a Billing Specialist in a major law firm until she retired, when she moved to Fort Lauderdale to help care for her youngest grandchild (Kaely). It was after retiring in Fort Lauderdale where she really found her zest for life. She was an avid table-tennis player, frequenting the Beach Community Center several days a week to play and socialize. She also competed and won many medals in the Senior Games over the years. Another favorite hobby was art – painting and charcoal sketching – which she excelled at, and left behind many pieces for her children and grandchildren to hold onto. She enjoyed frequenting the Galt Plaza area restaurants and bars with her friends until the ripe old age of 84, when some health setbacks prevented her from continuing her active lifestyle. She still enjoyed watching TV, especially tennis and the British comedy shows, and of course the company of family. In the last couple of years, she depended on the help of her aide, Petagay, who contributed to her quality of life. Until the end, Marjorie kept us on our toes with her witty comebacks and blunt observations. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia, and brother, Joseph, in England, and predeceased by her oldest sister, Pearl. She will be forever loved and greatly missed.
