Tribute

Mary Ellen (Smith) Sologuren, devoted wife and mother of three children, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2022, at age 90, at her residence at The Woodlands at John Knox Village in Pompano Beach, FL.

She was the loving wife of 55 years to the late Luis (Lucho) Ricardo Sologuren, Sr., and is survived by their three children: Luis R. Sologuren, Jr. (Maira) of Fort Lauderdale, George M. Sologuren (Margie) of Ocala, and Nancie Sologuren Bucher (William) of Raleigh, NC; her sister, Nancy (Smith) Dentz of Annapolis, MD; six grandchildren: George Michael Sologuren of St. Augustine, Teresita Sologuren of Orlando, Marielle Sologuren Kunhardt (Edward) of Fort Lauderdale, Matthew Sologuren of Ocala, Mary Katharine Bucher (Jess) of Cranston, RI, and Sarah Bucher of San Francisco; five adored great-grandchildren: Addison, Reagan, Caleb, Madeline and Isabelle; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Mary Ellen was born on March 12, 1932, in Baltimore, MD, to George and Hazel (Jennings) Smith. She graduated from Catholic High School of Baltimore in 1950. In 1953, she married Lucho, a newly graduated officer of the U.S. Naval Academy, and moved to Lima, Peru, where Lucho began his naval career. Mary Ellen was a kindergarten teacher and taught English. They returned to Baltimore in 1960, where Lucho worked for the Bendix Corporation. They were members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Baltimore. In 1966, they relocated to Fort Lauderdale when the Bendix Corporation moved their avionics division there. Mary Ellen was a Records Retention Specialist at the School Board of Broward County, Florida, for over 25 years before she retired in 1996. She and Lucho then served as volunteers and Eucharist Ministers at Holy Cross Hospital for the next 10+ years, collectively donating thousands of hours of their time to the non-profit Catholic hospital in Fort Lauderdale. They were also active parishioners of St. Coleman Catholic Church in Pompano Beach for more than five decades.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister, Sr. Georgine Marie Smith, OSF, of Aston, PA, her brother, Paul J. Smith of Avalon, NJ, and her beloved grandson, Steven Sologuren of Fort Lauderdale. 

A funeral mass is scheduled for Tuesday, June 19, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church

Private interment at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, North Lauderdale.
