Tribute

Ocie Cone Mims
November 22, 1934 – November 20, 2021

Ocie C. Mims was born on November 22, 1934 in Pavo, Georgia to Barney and Cora Wilson Cone from Thomasville, Georgia.

She received a degree in cosmetology from the Moultrie Beauty School and worked at a beauty shop in Thomasville. It was there that she met her husband Joseph. They had two sons, Jim and John. In 1960 they moved to Pompano Beach, Florida, where they spent the rest of their married life.

Ocie received Christ when she was eight years old in Pavo, Georgia. She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale, now First Baptist Church of Coconut Creek. She was a faithful member who loved her church, loved her pastors, and loved her family and friends. She was a giver and a prayer warrior and a strong witness for Christ.

She suffered from cerebral palsy all her life. After her husband passed away, she spent her last years in nursing facilities. Although physically challenged and sometimes not living in the best of circumstances, Ocie had an amazing testimony of being upbeat and praising her Lord. Her visitors came to encourage her, but oftentimes would leave being encouraged BY her. Her concern was always for others, not herself.

Ocie went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 20, 2021, just two days before her 87th birthday. Her smiling face and godly testimony will be remembered by all who knew her. Psalm 116.15 says, “precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.” Our loss is heaven’s gain!

Ocie is pre-deceased by her husband Joseph; her two sons, Jim and John; and her three brothers, Calbert, Barney Jr. and William. She is survived by her grandson, Reif M. Mims (wife, Christal); three great-grandchildren, Mae, Elena and Alivia; and three sisters, Laura Wood, Norma Daniel and Nellie Granquist.
