William “Bill” Thies, 80, of Fort Lauderdale passed away on January 23, 2018. Born in Washington, D.C. in 1937, Bill moved to Fort Lauderdale with his family in 1948 where he grew up. He attended St. Anthony Catholic School, Central Catholic (St. Thomas Aquinas) High School, and the University of Notre Dame.
After serving in the Army he returned to Fort Lauderdale to work for his family’s beer distributorship: Wm. Thies & Sons. Upon his father’s death in 1964 he took over, and along with his brother, Dennis led it through many years of growth. When he sold his interest and retired in 2001, the company was the largest beer wholesaler in the state.
For the last seventeen years he owned and operated Triple Crown Investments, a real estate company.

Bill was predeceased by his daughter, Gretchen Thies and his sister, Peggy Blaikie. He is survived by daughters, Krista (Joe) Marx of West Palm Beach, Heidi (Scott) O’Connor of Honolulu, HI, and Katrina Thies of Honolulu, HI; Sons, Bill (Nancy) Thies, Jim (Allison) Thies, and Tom (Melissa) Thies, all of Fort Lauderdale; Brother, Dennis Thies of Deerfield Beach; Sisters, Judy (Ed) Bullington of Pompano Beach, and Maryann (Jack) Peers of Lauderdale by the Sea; by his ex-wife Susan “Mimi” Thies of Honolulu, HI; 11 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass will be celebrated, at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 30th., at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church , 4595 Bayview Drive, Fort Lauderdale 33308.
